Elix Law: Brand Identity for a Boutique Law Firm

Services: Brand Strategy, Logo Design, Brand Guidelines, Stationery, Website Design

The Brief

After a career at major international law firms, veteran corporate lawyer Eric Lai launched Elix Law, a highly specialised, 2-to-3-lawyer boutique firm. Elix targets high-stakes clients (venture funds, life sciences, tech startups) who want direct, unlayered access to senior expertise for complex cross-border transactions and regulatory matters.

The brand identity needed to project seniority, analytical precision, and institutional credibility without the corporate bureaucracy.

The Concept

The name Elix is inspired by the helix, a natural structure that derives strength from its curves. This sparked our core brand philosophy: Success rarely moves in a straight line. Their clients constantly navigate friction, and a premier legal partner should adapt and move fluidly within it.

Brand Pillars:

  • Law should be structured, but never rigid.
  • Advice must be clear, actionable, and built to last.
  • A law firm should be a partner in growth, not just a problem-solver.

The Mark

The visual identity is anchored by a high-precision typographic system:

  • The Monogram: Built entirely from positive and negative space, where an interlocking E and L form a cohesive unit. A subtle, hidden third letterform emerges upon closer look, mirroring the firm’s ability to find clarity within complexity.
  • The Wordmark: Set in a classical serif typeface to ground the firm with institutional weight and traditional credibility, balanced against the modern sharpness of the monogram.

The Design System

We stripped away all unnecessary ornamentation to reflect the firm’s direct, corporate ethos.

Colour Palette

  • Anchored by Admiralty Navy (authoritative and deep), balanced by Grey, Powder Blue and a Teal accent to allow layouts room to breathe while maintaining a premium corporate register.

Collateral & Applications

  • Brand Guidelines: Precise rules for logo construction, clear space, and typography across digital and print applications.
  • Business Cards: Minimalist navy and white layouts integrating WeChat QR code and connectivity for cross-border networking.
  • Letterhead: Restrained layout featuring the monogram as a subtle architectural watermark.
  • Website UI: A dark, high-end editorial hero layout utilizing abstract sector imagery (DNA structures for life sciences, architectural glass for corporate work).

The Outcome

Elix Law launched with a cohesive, sophisticated visual language that communicates its core value proposition instantly: a firm senior enough to be trusted with hard problems and massive corporate complexity, yet lean enough to deliver direct partner access.
